Roads in Portugal are generally of a good quality, though routes off the beaten track have been known to be in a state of disrepair – at worst. The road network is well connected and allows easy access to most parts of the country. A red warning triangle must be carried in the vehicle in case of breakdown or emergency. Public transport in Portugal is of a generally good standard, with bus services operating regularly, offering cheap, reliable transport. Coach services cover countrywide trips and other transport such as taxis, the underground and trams are all available, widely used and fairly cheap. The Portuguese rail system is well connected too, and offers regular services to major tourist destinations. Other destinations can be travelled to, but services run less frequently. TAP Air Portugal and Portuglia offer regular internal flights through the country and flights can also be chartered. Sea and river transport is available throughout the country and offers an affordable and scenic way of travelling through Portugal – at the expense of speed.
