It is simple enough to reach Portugal by road, with a number of routes available over the Spanish border – open all year round in most places. Catching a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao is one choice available, and bypasses the need to drive through France. Those not bothered by driving through most of mainland Europe may choose to take the Channel Tunnel in to France, then drive ever Westward until Portugal is reached. Eurolines operating out of London’s Victoria Coach Station offer routes to a number of Portuguese destinations. A standard pink EU driving license is the required driving documentation. If a photo licence is not held, an International Driving Permit must be obtained along with suitable photo ID. Insurance is mandatory and Green Card insurance is recommended.
